I’m just back from the dentist office from a teeth cleaning. While
there I discussed amalgam filling safety with my dentist. He feels
that the evidence supports the conclusion that amalgam fillings are
safe, that they pose no health problem. From the discussion I gather
that the fear by many is that (1) ground off filling material will be
swallowed and the mercury content in the filling will be toxic and/or
(2) mercury in the filling will leach out of the filling over time and
be absorbed in the body where it will be toxic. My dentist’s belief is
that the quantity of mercury is so small in amalgam fillings that they
pose no risk.
Any definitive studies that you know of that supports or refutes the
toxicity of amalgam fillings. Also is there a difference in affect
between fillings under crowns and those that are exposed? What are
the symptoms, if any, resulting from the toxicity of the fillings?
Should I have my 6 amalgam fillings removed?
Thanks for any information.
