Lowering *total* cholesterol, and affecting HDL/LDL ratios/levels
individually are definitely two separate things. Magnesium for
instance lowers total cholesterol, but unfortunately also lowers
the HDL ratio.
Raising HDL fractions can be accomplished with w-6 EFA sources
(borage seed oil, black currant oil, primrose oil, fish oils…),
supplements such as lecithin, choline, inositol, etc… or large
amounts of vitamins such as C, E, B-3/4. The use of water-soluble
fiber effectively lowers LDL cholesterol as well.
Vit E, niacin (niacinamide) and manganese are one of the few that
not only lower total cholesterol, but also increase the HDL ratio,
however high intake of the latter two can trigger liver problems if
not needed.
Silicon levels give an approximate indication of w-6 EFA activity,
your sodium status can be used as criteria on the amount of choline
to take, and your phosphorus status does the same for lecithin.
Regular exercise and keeping your stress level to a minimum are
also helpful in maintaining higher HDL ratios for both, cholesterol
and triglycerides, while it should be noted (but not necessarily
recommended) that people who consume alcoholic beverages average
higher HDL fractions compared to those who don’t.

The most effective supplement with low toxicity I’m aware of for
gout is Vit B-5 (pantothenic acid). 1-2,000mg for a few days is
usually all that’s required (check with your practitioner). Low
zinc, potassium, calcium or magnesium may also contribute to gout.
It’s important to avoid purine/acid-forming foods and stay away
from supplements such as lecithin.
Most drug stores give out pamphlets with dietary recommendations
for specific medical problems; you should get the one for gout.

What are people’s experiences with cataract surgery, lens implants
versus using a contact lens to focus sight. Have people had infections,
complications, rejections, eye damage, from this procedure.
Are there any other ways of getting rid of difficult cataracts other
than surgery? Please post whatever you know.
Thanks,
P.R.
Seasonal Affect Disorder is supposed to be treatable by light
boxes, but recently I’ve heard about a goggles form of this.
Anyone have a clue as to where these might come from? Are
they experimental only, or can a physician get hold of them?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
