I’ve been under the longstanding (and naive??) impression that
pharmaceuticals of all kinds were chemically pure with a few inert
ingredients such as binders or capsule coats. That may be true for some
drugs (if its not, I’d be interested in knowing about that too) but I gather
that may not be the case for vaccines and antibiotics. I seem to remember
reading a long time ago that some people used to be (maybe still are?)
allergic to tetanus serum because of horse antibodies in it. More recently I
have read about stuff such as formaldehyde being used to kill the
bacteria/viruses used to make vaccines. I have also read about mercury
compounds being used as preservatives in vaccines and antibiotics.
How much of this is true? If its true, what are the concentrations of these
"other than active" agents in our medications and how do they compare to
OSHA and EPA (or other) exposure safety standards? I’m not really interested
in answers that say qualitatively that it is or is not a problem. I’d like
to see numbers derived from actual analysis of medications and their
comparison with established quantitative exposure standards.
Thanks in advance for your help!
