As many of you may be aware (or maybe unaware), alcohol based mouthwashes
are potentially harmful to your health. Past and present research has
documented the relationship between the use of alcohol based mouthrinses
and occurance of oral and pharyngeal cancer. Leading brands of mouthwash
on the market today have as much as 25% alcohol by volume! The sole
purpose of alcohol in mouthwash is to create a pleasant tasting product
that the consumer loves to use (and unfortunately for kids, to drink…)
Alcohol has no bacteria fighting properties whatsoever, and its "breath
freshening" abilites are shortlived. (Thus the need for company’s to market
"breath mints"… for those times in between using mouthwash.) During an
18 month period beginning in January 1978, 422 cases of mouthwash ingestion
in children under the age of six were collected by the National Poison
Control Network. This data may seem to be outdated, but not until you
realize that the marketing of alcohol based mouthwashes ferociously
continues in the media today (as various comapany’s fight for market
share). Unfortunately for the consumer, the lack of a better alternative
has led to the continued use of these products.
As I mentioned before, non alcohol based mouthwashes are difficult to find.
After recently reading an article from "Health and Living" (from which I
took the facts that were previously stated.), I began my search for an
alternative mouthrinse. There were only two companies I found that made
alcohol free mouthrinse. The first was a company out of Maine, but I was
unable to contact them. Another company that I was able to locate did have
the product that I was looking for. The company is called Oxyfresh.
Oxyfresh markets an alcohol-free mouthrinse that is cruelty free and 100%
envrionmentally safe. I have been using their mouthwash (and toothpaste)
for two months now and am very pleased with the effectiveness of the
product. As an added bonus, the mouthrinse (and toothpaste) also contains
Oxygene, a very effective deodorizing and cleansing agent. Oxygene
actually eliminates mouth odors from their source. I have shared this
product with friends of mine, and they all agree that this is a great
alternative to the leading dental hygeine products on most store shelves
today.
I am consumer that believes that companies with a clear vision to protect
the environment as well as to deliver a superior product to the consumer
should be recognized. I will be happy to answer any questions regarding
Oxyfresh so that you too can try this product. I also have the articles
that I came across earlier this year that alerted me to the risks of using
alcohol based mouthrinses.

Getting back to basics, hydrogen peroxide diluted to .3-.6% will make an
excellent moutwash that will do as much for you as the high priced spread.

Sorry to rain on your parade… Matol is Alive and Well!
As Mark Twain once said (to paraphrase); The news of my demise has been grossly exagerated!
Here is the scoop as I understand it (and I’m well connected):
Matol has had a minor shake up (internal battle between owners with associated reorganization —
not unlike what IBM & Pennys were recently involved in). That is now resolved. Matol is NOT
shutting down, and there’s certainly no reason to panic.
