Straight Answer About Mono Needed

I tested positive for mononucleosis in June 1991 and had all the classic
symptoms – flulike symptoms coupled with EXTREME fatigue, plus some unusual
symptoms – pus-lined throat (more typical of strep throat, I was led to
believe, but THAT test was negative), canker sores, etc.

My question is: Can a person have mono more than once? I know it’s a viral
infection, but if I tested positive then, will I ALWAYS test positive?

I feel like I may have it again, but I don’t want to waste my time going in
for a blood test if it’s going to show up positive because I had it once.

Any straight answers about this would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Uh, I hate to be pessimistic but #1) GET YOURSELF INTO BED! and #2) I got
mono "twice" (a supposed medical impossibility) and since then came down
with chronic fatigue syndrome. Many people with CFIDS (chronic fatigue)
got their start with a bad viral infection like mono.

At any rate, you CAN test positive again (I did) and if you do feel
like you have mono you should see a doctor. However, if you
test negative for mono but the symptoms continue, you may
have CFIDS. It is hard to find a doctor who knows anything about
CFIDS (much less believes in it), just to warn you. See, when I
had my latest "remission," I thought I had mono again as well.
The doctors took a mono test but could do nothing for me since
it came out negative for acute mononucleosis. Fortunately I
had a friend who referred me to a good doctor who
    knows something about CFIDS.

Anyway, regardless of what you have, you must NOT push yourself
to do anything. It will only make you feel worse and keep you
from healing. You might also try the newsgroup alt.med.cfs
for people with chronic fatigue…we’re very knowledgeable
about "alternative" treatments for fatigue or mono.

    Good luck!

I had mono twice so, yes, you can have it more than once. It was very bad and
when I say I slept for 22 hours a day, I mean it. Even eating tired me out to
where I had to sleep for another day at a time.
They gave me something for it plus a different kind of steroids, and it finally
subsided, but the whole thing took about 3-4 months the first time and about 2
    months the second time.
